With their elegantly minimal furniture, inventive craftsmanship and emphasis on communal life, the Shakers helped define a unique chapter in design history. But beyond aesthetics, their work reveals a complex world shaped by utopian ideals, gender equality and a deep intertwining of worship and labour. In this expansive exhibition, original Shaker objects—from ladder-back chairs to handmade tools—are shown alongside contemporary responses by international designers. Designed by the acclaimed studio Formafantasma, »The Shakers: A World in the Making« bridges past and present, opening new perspectives on sustainability, collective living and the quiet power of making by hand. The exhibition’s key visual, featured on the poster, was created using newly commissioned images by photographer Alex Lesage, capturing Shaker artefacts and architecture in New Lebanon, NY—the site of the Shakers' central community.
