About us

The Vitra Design Museum is one of the world’s leading design museums. It explores and communicates the history and present of design, placing it in dialogue with architecture, art, and everyday culture. In its main building, designed by Frank Gehry, the museum presents two major temporary exhibitions each year.

The Vitra Schaudepot, designed by Herzog & de Meuron, offers a comprehensive overview of the history of modern furniture: from trends and styles to key figures and manufacturers, from groundbreaking innovations to failed experiments, from iconic pieces to their entanglement with developments in society, industry, architecture, and art.

The foundation of the Vitra Design Museum's work is its collection, which includes key pieces from the history of design from 1800 to the present, as well as several significant estates—such as those of designers Charles & Ray Eames, Hella Jongerius, Alexander Girard, and Verner Panton.

The lower level of the Schaudepot provides insights into selected areas of the collection, including the Eames Collection. It also houses the Vitra Schaudepot Lab, where visitors can learn more about materials, processes, and prototypes.

The museum's library and document archive are available to researchers upon request. The museum's exhibitions are designed as traveling exhibitions and are presented around the world. On the Vitra Campus, they are accompanied by a wide-ranging program of events, guided tours, and workshops.
