Miniature Bone Chair

Joris Laarman, 2006

The Bone Chair, designed by Joris Laarman, uses software that simulates the growth of trees and human bone structures. The designer determines the position of the seat, backrest and the contact points to the floor. Within the given parameters, the simulation calculates the optimal construction in order to achieve the best possible stability with as little material as possible. Because of the complex shape, a 3D ceramic mold was printed to produce the original Bone Chairs, which was later poured with aluminum. To demould the form, the mold had to be destroyed.
