Alexander Girard, 1971

Together with Charles & Ray Eames and George Nelson, Alexander Girard represents one of the leading figures in American design of the postwar period. A key focus of his oeuvre was textile design. Through his designs for furniture upholstery and interior decorating fabrics, Girard was able to express his passion for colours, patterns and textures. GirardŮs work enriched twentieth-century design by adding to it a playful and sensual component.

In 1971 Girard designed forty fabric units and graphics for hanging panels. These hanging Environmental Enrichment Panels had been mobilized as decoration or acoustical tuner panels mainly in offices. Vitra has reissued some of the most important designs as prints on cushions. The sofa and seat cushions ideally complement the Suita Sofa of Antonio Citterio and the furniture of Charles & Ray Eames, George Nelson and Verner Panton as well as adding an interesting touch to contemporary or classical interiors.
